Sarasota, Fla -- The City of Sarasota in conjunction with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee will host the annual Veterans Day parade in downtown Sarasota on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11 starting at 10 a.m.
The annual event will begin at Main Street and Osprey Avenue and will continue Sarasota’s longstanding history of honoring military personnel. At the conclusion of the parade, a ceremony will be held at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue. The ceremony is expected to begin at approximately 11 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend.
The keynote speaker will be Representative Greg Steube, District 73 of the Florida House of Representatives, which includes Sarasota County and Manatee County.
“The parade and ceremony are opportunities for the citizens of
Sarasota to honor not only veterans of the armed services but police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and emergency medical personnel,” said Dan Kunkel, Patriotic Observance Committee president.
The theme for the 2013 Veterans Day ceremony is “Service and Sacrifice”. Units appearing in the parade will include: veterans service organizations, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, color guards, marching bands, local high school Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps units, civic organizations and historical military equipment.

Venice, Fla. -- The annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Venice will be held at Patriots Park, 800 Venetia Bay Blvd. The ceremony starts at 10 a.m.
Bradenton, Fla. -- The Manatee Veterans Council holds its parade starting at 10 a.m. Monday, at the Manatee County Fairgrounds, 1402 14th Ave W., Palmetto. It concludes with a ceremony at Sutton Park, Sixth St. W., Palmetto, Fla.
Sarasota National Cemetery -- Starting with an opening ceremony at 2:45 p.m., Bishop Frank Dewane of the Diocese of Venice will conduct a Veterans Day Mass at 3 p.m. Monday at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota.
Punta Gorda, Fla. -- The Military Heritage Museum and the Charlotte County Veterans' Council will present a Veterans Day Ceremony in Laishley Park in Punta Gorda at 11:00 a.m. Vietnam veteran, twice-wounded John Ross, will speak of his 'angels,' and Vietnam nurses Laurie Druyer and Jean Carr and WWII nurse Grace Chicken will talk about their experiences.
