SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - The Sarasota High School School Boys' Cross Country Team had plenty to cheer about at this weekend's Florida Cross Country Championships. Junior Ben Hartvigsen won the Class 4A State Individual Title and led the Sailors' boys team to a 4th place finish overall.
Hartvigsen ran the challenging 5K (3.1 mile) course at Appalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee in a time of 15:39.70, beating second-place finisher Deshay Fernandes of Miami's Columbus High School by more than 4 seconds.
His gold medal also helped propel the Sarasota High Boys' Team to a 4th place overall finish at the championships. Joining him on the team were sophomore Shane Kilduff (16:54.17) who finished in 50th place, sophomore Ryan Guendjoian (16:54.56) who finished 52nd, freshman Orlando Cicilioni who finished 77th, junior Anthony Bilotta, who finished 102nd, and seniors Dylan Hull and Miles Perkins, who finished 117th and 131st, respectively.
Hartvigsen, who runs for Sarasota High but is also a straight A student at Pine View, is the second state cross country champion from Sarasota High in past three years. Adam Bradtmueller, who now runs for East Tennessee State University, won the championship in 2015.
Other area athletes to compete in the Class 4A Championships included Jonathan Reid of Lakewood Ranch, who finished 10th, and Marcel Sanchez of Manatee High, who finished 32nd.
