SARASOTA, FLA. - Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, fans of shopping local now have Small Business Saturday. American Express created the new shopping day three years ago but many Suncoast shoppers are happy to support local businesses.
“It is all about the local economy and our local community and supporting the folks who live here and make a living here,” said Dan Kennedy.
Kennedy was supporting Vatican City Vinyl Records on Saturday with his wife Tootie.
The couple love music and love supporting local businesses.
“We want to make sure our community grows and that people that take the risk to start small businesses are successful.”
Christian Downing owns the new and used vinyl record shop on U.S. 301 in Sarasota. He has only been open for a couple of months but says business is good.
“From day one until now it just keeps rising and I am quite surprised at the turnout.”
Vatican City Vinyl Records is a spinoff from Downing’s passion of music He tells ABC7, business has been especially good during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
“It was incredible yesterday actually. It was a great day and then the day prior to Thanksgiving was also an amazing day.”
He hopes business is even better on Small Business Saturday. American Express dubbed the Saturday after Thanksgiving Small Business Saturday three years ago and it is catching on with consumers.
“We want to make sure that our community grows and the people that take the risk to start small businesses are successful,” said Kennedy.
Toy Lab owner Lynn Archibald tells ABC7 Saturday is normally a busy day for toy stores but she say many of her customers made it a point to stop by on Small Business Saturday.
“Today is a great day, a lot of people have mentioned it so it is true it is on a lot of people’s minds,” said Archibald.
Customers like Bonnie Hassler say they would rather support mom and pop businesses instead of big box stores.
“I don’t need my money to go to Arkansas, or where ever those places are.”
President Obama is doing his part to support Small Business Saturday. He took his daughters shopping in a locally owned bookstore in Washington D.C.
