SARASOTA, Fla. - For weeks, millions of Americans have hit the stores looking for some holiday deals.
Target is the victim of a major security breach potentially affecting millions of customers. Hackers may have pulled the biggest steal of all.
The Secret Service is investigating a nationwide data breach at Target where approximately 40 million customer credit and debit cards may have been compromised.
The breach occurred from November 27th though December 15th, and involved data stored on the magnetic strip of cards used in stores, not online.
Frequent Target shoppers on the Suncoast express their concern.
"It's kinda scary and I really didn't give it a thought, but if it can happen at Target, it can happen anywhere because I use credit cards everywhere I go,” Kaye Branson.
And some have even considered resorting to cash.
“Even before coming here now, I went to the ATM to get out cash. I refuse to use my credit card, debit card, anything at the store,” says Joseph Destefano.
"It's not just Target. It seems to be a nationwide, you know, almost a universal thing now, and it's getting worse and worse. Sometimes you wonder, you know, should you be using cash,” says Bruce Stewart.
Target now says the problem is fixed, but are urging customers to keep a close eye on their credit and debit card statements for any suspicious activity.
Target still does not know exactly how the breach occurred, but say they are working with a third party forensics firm to investigate the situation, and prevent future security breaches.
