Suncoast principal awarded the Principal Achievement Award

SARASOTA, Fla. - A Suncoast principal has been named tops in the state of Florida. Alta Vista Elementary's Barbara Shirley was honored Monday with the Principal Achievement Award for outstanding leadership.

Florida Education Secretary Pam Stewart presented the award to Shirley Monday in Orlando.

Shirley also wins an overnight stay at the Cinderella Castle Suite at the Magic Kingdom and $5,000.

Despite being a Title One school, with 90% of its students receiving free or reduced cost meals, Alta Vista has earned an "A" grade for 10 straight years.
