SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. -- In golf, like the lottery, you've got to be in it to win it. And that’s the case for a Suncoast golfer who recently qualified for one of golf's major tournaments.
Dave Hronek is a club pro who lives on the Suncoast. He has played in tournaments before, but his finish at the Club Pro Championships recently got him the brass ring in golf -- a major.
"It was in Myrtle Beach, and I finished tied for 8th. The top 20 get an entry into the PGA Championship at Valhalla in August."
Once he found out that he had qualified for the PGA Championship, it all hit home. "The good thing was that my wife was there with me…it's a dream come true. It really is."
Tears of joy, tears of relief, tears of vindication. "It is emotional…I have had a tough year. My faith kept me going through the last 11 months. I stuck to my game plan up at Myrtle Beach, and now I'm going to Valhalla."
He is now the director of instruction at Countryside in Clearwater, but ABC 7 caught up with him at Calusa Lakes in Nokomis before he played a prep round. He'll play there as part of his practice leading up to the PGA.
“Obviously, you have to be realistic about it knowing you're going up against the best players in the world. And playing in a golf tournament that you know the course is set up very difficult. I have no worries about going out there and competing at the highest level."
