SARASOTA, Fla. - Like many Suncoast residents, Roy McBean moved to the Suncoast to retire. But his retirement left little time for golf; instead, he dedicated it to making this community even better than what drew him here in the first place.

Roy McBean died over the weekend, but his legacy will live on for generations.

In 1998, McBean gave ABC 7 a tour of the boys and girls club named in his honor. At the time, the North Sarasota club was the largest of its kind on the grounds of a public housing complex. As a former police officer, McBean knew this was a place that could change young lives for years to come.

Along with the Boys and Girls Club, McBean served on the boards of Doctor’s Hospital, The United Way, and the Ringling College of Art and Design, among others.

His family says serving his community was a passion of Roy's.

"He tried to make a difference in whatever small way he could. He saw a broader picture of life, certainly better than I did, and he was very realistic," says his wife Helen.

"It’s apparent in the overwhelming support we've received since his passing. It’s been constant calls, there’s been people offering to do all sorts of things, so that's a reflection of the way he lived,” says his son Roy.

Roy McBean was 84 years old. He's survived by three sons and six grandchildren, and a community forever indebted to his contributions.

His family is planning a celebration of life at the McBean Boys and Girls Club in the coming weeks. We'll bring you those details when they are finalized.
