Suncoast collector shows off his Hollywood memorabilia

SARASOTA - You might get a real surprise if you could see inside some of the homes on your street. One Sarasota man has recently been featured on TLC for what he has inside his home.

Stepping into Greg Cochrane's one bedroom apartment is like stepping into a museum of Hollywood memorabilia. His bedroom is so crowded, there's no room for a bed, so he sleeps on the floor.

“When I come home and I shut the door behind me, I can lose myself in a whole world that I create."

Greg started collecting at age 4, when he got his first Batman shirt. And now almost 47 years later, collecting is his passion. "I've been known to spend all my food money on collectables, and spend 2 or 3 dollars on food."

But he says that's his choice. He has few expenses. And since his wife died, he has totally thrown himself -- and his money -- into collecting.

And some things, like the B9 robot from the Lost in space TV series, are like friends. “When nobody is here, I’ll just turn him on and he’ll talk to me."

He's got a big collection from the I Dream of Jeannie show. He recently got to meet the star, Barbara Eden. "To meet her was a dream come true. I know it's a bad was a dream come true."

He also has outfits from Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, the Flying Nun, and Batman and Robin.

Most items are expertly made replicas of the originals used in the shows.

Greg says his collection shows the importance of Hollywood to our culture. "Hollywood has affected our lives, whether we realize it or not. Whether politically, relationship-wise, it’s taken us to our dreams, our nightmares…so my theory is, everybody needs a little Hollywood magic in their home."

And Greg has a lot. “By collecting all this, it keeps that small child in me alive. It helps me to remember a simpler time in my life when I didn't have to worry about rent or utilities, or bombings, or terrorists attacks."
