SARASOTA - Drivers are no doubt unhappy with the recent hike in gas prices, and it doesn't seem as if there will be any relief in sight. Some analysts predict prices may hit $5 a gallon by May.
People we spoke with Wednesday are very upset about the high prices. Some are even ditching their cars and purchasing scooters as a way to deal with the high prices.
Frustrations at the pump are being felt nationwide, as the price for gasoline continues to spike. “It's frustrating to everyone. People are earning less money, and spending more for day to day necessities.”
In the United States, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is about $3.60. In Sarasota, the average is about ten cents higher.
That's why some motorists are putting the brakes on driving their cars.
At Granny's Motorsports in Sarasota, employees say new customers are coming in every day looking to replace their vehicles with something like a Vespa scooter. “Some of those scooters get up to 100 miles per gallon. They are automatic, easy to operate -- no shifting. It's becoming more and more acceptable,” says Granny’s Bob Glenn.
Teresa Richmond is tired of the high gas prices and says she saw the light -- the light on a new motorcycle, that is. She and her husband bought two of them last weekend. “I can honestly say that if I drove it to work every single day, I would be saving $150 a month on gas.”
One easy way to save a few bucks is to visit a gas price-finder website to look for the lowest prices. Websites like
sarasotagasprices.com rely on drivers to report the latest gas prices and uses that data to create a list of the lowest prices in any given area.
