SARASOTA - After months of construction, Ed Smith Stadium was ready to reveal its $30 million makeover Tuesday. The first Baltimore Orioles' first home spring training game of 2011 was a sellout.
The newly renovated stadium is twice the size as the old one. If you want to get a little lunch break or break from the sun, they can go and get a bite to eat in the new Cafe 54.
There is also a brand new clubhouse. And if you want to get into the spirit while enjoying the game, you can get the Orioles gear in the new team store.
The stadium also includes wider concourses, a new upper level concourse with standing room only area, private suites, more restrooms, and an extended overhang to help fans get out of the sun. And all the seats are refurbished seats from Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Just beyond the left field outfield wall is an all-new dining pavillion, with bistro-style tables and drink rails.
And it's not just the Orioles cashing in on Tuesday’s hustle and bustle. Many organizations like the Knights of Columbus, who volunteer at concession stands, raise thousands of dollars, thanks to fans. "Sure it brings people down for business, but they don't think about the money it brings in for charities."
Construction crews were working down to the wire to get it completed.
The Orioles beat the Rays 12-6, behind 5 Orioles home runs.
