SARASOTA - The weather is beginning to cool and with it growing season begins for many vegetables here in Florida. And one of the best ways to do that is with something called an EarthBox.
"EarthBoxes are really simple containers to use for growing plants; they basically optimize the growing conditions of the soil and water so that even people with brown thumbs can successfully grow vegetables" says Robert Kluson agriculture and resources extension agent.
Kluson recently showed the students at Booker Middle School how to grow veggies with the help of EarthBoxes. The Edible Schoolyard program teaches the kids that veggies just don't come from the supermarket…they're learning how to grow their own.
"I want to be a good chef when I grow up; I wanted to learn how to make peppers and how to grow tomatoes" says Booker Middle 6th grader Daiyana Godet.
The students first learn to assemble the EarthBox and then how to make the soil ingredients. From there they just water the plants and watch them grow.
After only a few weeks they already have tomatoes on the way. And it's something anyone can do. "Lets say you don't have a backyard and you have a balcony…well these work well on a balcony. I know people who are growing in them in their pool cages as well so incredibly versatile…and for folks of all capabilities."
Next week we're going to continue this EarthBox theme and talk with the man who invented them. He lives right here on the Suncoast. .
