State troopers across 5 states participate in 'Operation Southern Shield'

(WWSB) - State troopers across five states are taking part in “Operation Southern Shield.”

FHP joins a week-long initiative across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee to reduce serious bodily injury and fatal crashes on Florida’s roadways.

The goal is to crack down on speeding, seat belts, distracted driving and impaired driving.

"Troopers will take appropriate enforcement action on those drivers who put themselves and others in danger. We want everyone to have a safe traveling experience, and I encourage motorists to do their part by complying with all traffic laws, including making sure everyone in their vehicle is buckled up and drivers are not driving distracted or impaired,” said Colonel Gene Spaulding, Director of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave FHP grant money to increase its presence.

They're doing it now since summer is the busiest time on the roads.
