SRQ Airport rejects ad from women's rights group

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Ultraviolet is online organization works to fight sexism and expand women's rights. The group reached out Sarasota Bradenton International Airport’s (SRQ) advertising agency about a month ago, requesting to place one of their ads in the airport terminal. The airport rejected the ad.

The ad in question states “Florida women are paid $.84 cents to every man's dollar,” and includes other facts about health insurance inequality and maternity and sick leave in the state. Ultraviolet says they received their statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and a report issued by the Center for American Progress.

"We determined that [the ad] was political in nature,” said Martin Lange, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority. “Our policy is not to allow any political advertising within the terminal building, or for that matter, anywhere on the airport property."

Ultraviolet's campaign director says the ads are not political, and include only facts that people need to be aware of.

"These are the facts of the lives of women in Florida,” says Karin Roland, Ultraviolet’s campaign director, “and the fact that women are earning 84 cents for every dollar a man earns in Florida, and that Florida's representatives oppose the bill that would help close that gap, isn't a political issue.”

Though they've been unable to crack SRQ, Ultraviolet did put up a billboard a few weeks ago on University Boulevard not far from the airport.
