SARASOTA, Fla. -- Spring officially starts today, Thursday, and with it comes the vernal equinox. This is when the sun is directly above the Earth's equator and the day and night are of equal length. This year, 2014, the spring equinox falls on March 20, and the fall equinox is September 23, the first day of fall.

These astronomical events we know as equinoxes and solstices occur four times a year where they signify the end of one season and the beginning of yet another. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, equinoxes occur in March and September and herald the spring and fall . Solstices mark the beginning of summer and winter and occur in June and December.
