**UPDATE** -- Florida Highway Patrol has reopened all southbound lanes at the River Road exit after closing them overnight for overpass repairs.
NORTH PORT, Fla. - Traffic was running smoothly on southbound I-75 Thursday after Wednesday’s traffic nightmare due to a dump truck crash. But ongoing repair work now has the road closed overnight Thursday.
Florida Highway Patrol has closed all southbound lanes in the Venice/North Port area as workers repair a damaged overpass.
The road will remain closed will be until 7am Friday, beginning at River Road (exit #191) through Sumter Road (#182). Drivers will be directed south on River Road, turning east onto U.S. 41, then heading north on Sumter Road back to the interstate.
The Ponce De Leon Boulevard overpass was damaged early Wednesday when a dump truck on I-75 southbound failed to lower its bed completely. The truck bed struck the overpass and was ripped from the vehicle. The driver was later arrested for leaving the scene on foot.
Damages to the overpass forced FHP to shut down the southbound lanes until 4pm, causing many traffic headaches and backups.
FHP says more overnight road closures may be need to complete the repairs.
