Slightly above average hurricane season expected

Sarasota, FL (WWSB) - It's just about here! Only 30 more days left before the official start of the 2018 hurricane season.

According to Dr. Philip Klotzbach from Colorado State University we will have a slightly above hurricane season in the number of storms that develop (14 vs 12) but an average number of hurricanes which is 7, and 3 major storms with winds in excess of 110 mph.

This is all well and good but it only takes one storm hitting the Suncoast to make it an active season for us.

Now is the time to prepare.  Don't wait until the storm threatens.  If you wait too long the supplies that you need may not be available.

Last year we saw an extreme season due to La Nina, the cooling of the E. Pacific near Peru.  This year models are trending more for an El Nino to form.  This will limit the number of major storms due to the increased shear this phenomenon creates over the Atlantic basin.

Whatever happens be sure to keep up all season long from June 1st. through Nov. 30th by downloading the ABC7 First Alert Weather app and following @Suncoastweather on Facebook.

We will have all the latest on the tropics on our web page at MySuncoast.com.

Have a safe season.
