PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - The skeletal remains found earlier this month in the Pirate Harbor section of Punta Gorda have been identified as those of Danny Paul Mordenti, who was reported missing in May 2008.

On January 10, 2014, the new owners of a residence in the 24000 block of Jolly Roger Blvd. were having the lot beside their residence cleared of underbrush. The workers found a wallet in the brush that contained Mordenti’s identification. When the new owner looked further into the underbrush, he saw what appeared to be human skeletal remains in the area and a rope hanging from a tree.

Major Crimes detectives and Crime Scene Technicians responded and recovered the remains and any other evidence remaining in the area. The remains were turned over to the Medical Examiner’s Office for analysis.

A comparison of Mordenti’s dental records confirmed the remains to be those of Danny Paul Mordenti. Detectives have notified Mordenti’s relatives of the findings.

Mordenti was 23 years old when he was reported missing by his grandmother on May 23, 2008. At that time, deputies used both the Sheriff’s Office’s helicopter and bloodhound to try to locate the missing man. The dog led deputies from the grandmother’s Jolly Roger Blvd. home to Burnt Store Road, a distance of more than a mile.

Further anthropological forensic testing is still pending with the Medical Examiner’s Office.
