SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. -- Three people were seriously injured and three others were also injured in a collision on I-75 in Venice Monday morning.
It happened just after 3am in the southbound lanes just past the Jacaranda Boulevard exit (#193).
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a Cadillac sedan with two occupants was stopped for an unknown reason partially in the roadway and partially on the right shoulder.
That's when a southbound minivan failed to notice the stopped vehicle in time and crashed into the left rear of the sedan, then overturned in the road way. The sedan was pushed into the guard rail.
The driver of the sedan, 24-year-old Andrew Bigelow of Sarasota, suffered serious injuries and was flown to Blake Medical Center for treatment. His passenger suffered minor injuries.
The minivan had four occupants, all Cape Coral residents who were taken to Venice Regional for treatment. The driver, 52-year-old Paul Rieger, and 19-year-old passenger Joey Rieger both suffered serious injuries. The other two passengers suffered minor injuries, according to FHP.
The crash closed the interstate for about two and a half hours.
Charges are pending further investigation.
