SARASOTA FL---   The 1-millage rate tax -- property owners currently pay is set to expire.  The money currently generates about $40 million a year for the Sarasota County School district.  And with the end date looming officials are asking voter to approve continuing the referendum.

Come March 2014 officials will hold a special election to decide whether the property tax should be renewed.  School officials say without the money the quality of education provided in the district will suffer and that the move could also mean lay offs.

Sarasota County school is currently among the top in the state.  The school district is also at the tops the list for the highest-paid teachers in the state.  Coming up on ABC 7 at 6PM we have more the the millage rate referendum.
