Shining Stars honored by Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse

SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - The Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse celebrating success and shining stars Tuesday. The organization hosting it's 13th Annual Shining Stars Recognition and Awards Luncheon. SCOSA honoring its Citizen of the Year, Graci McGillicuddy, its high school and middle school student shining stars and presenting its Community Leadership Award.

Citizen of the Year McGillicuddy has spent the last 3 decades as a child advocate here on the Suncoast. Her passion is helping children who have been abused and those who are in foster care. Many children today are being forced into the foster care system because of their parents' substance abuse issues. Graci and her husband Dennis have teamed up with Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital to form the All Star Children's Foundation which is now building a campus of caring in Sarasota. The facility will help children recover from trauma in a residential, home like setting.

Booker Middle School student Jaylin Caldwell was honored as the organization's Middle School Shining Star and Morgan Davie, a senior at Sarasota High School was named High School Shining Star.

Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System was presented with the Coalition's Community Leadership Award for its efforts to combat substance abuse and the area's opioid problem. ABC7's Scott Dennis served as emcee of Tuesday's program.
