SARASOTA COUNTY-- Governor Rick Scott will make his first visit to the Benderson Park rowing facility on Thursday, while the venue hosts the 2013 U.S. Rowing Masters Championships.
Just two years ago, a visit from the republican governor would have likely been hard to swallow. That year, he vetoed $5 million in state funding for the park. Since then, he has agreed to send a total of $10 million in 2012 and 2013.
"I think he will realize how big this really is from an economic standpoint, and how important it was that he not veto the dollars that were put into the budget," said State Senator Bill Galvano.
Senator Galvano as well as other state lawmakers from the Suncoast have been pushing Scott for years to allocate funds to the rowing facility.
"That money in our budget is there because the impacts are real and the return for the voters and the citizens of Florida is real," said Galvano.
Benderson officials will learn on September 2nd, if the venue is awarded the bid for the 2017 FISA World Rowing Championships.
Scott will tour Benderson park at 8 Thursday morning. It's the same time the regatta gets underway.
The event runs from 8am-2pm Thursday-Sunday.
