SIESTA KEY, Fla. -A 78-year-old woman was hit and killed by a small SUV Wednesday while walking along the sidewalk on Midnight Pass Road.

78-year-old Carol Goodwin of Sarasota was pronounced dead at the scene.

It happened at 9:18am Wednesday in front of the Tortuga Club condos just north of Turtle Beach on the south end of Siesta Key.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 35-year-old Maria Fernandez was in a stopped vehicle in a parking space when she accidentally pressed the accelerator.  That caused the SUV to drive through the bushes and across the sidewalk, striking Goodwin.

Troopers have re-opened Midnight Pass Road on the south end of the island after it had been closed off due to a fatal car crash.

Fernandez was charged with Driving Without a License Causing Death or Serious Bodily Injuries.
