SARASOTA - Troopers say a Sarasota teen died early Friday when he flipped the SUV he was driving.

The crash happened at 2:20am on Palmer Boulevard east of Interstate 75.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 18-year-old David Mahoney of Sarasota was driving his SUV westbound on Palmer near the intersection with Nandina Drive, when for unknown reasons, his vehicle drifted left across the eastbound lanes and off the south shoulder of the road.

The SUV struck a large group of rocks and overturned, coming to a rest in a small creek bed.

Mahoney, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.
