MANATEE COUNTY - A crash near the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus Friday morning took the life of a locally-known basketball and skateboarding coach.

35-year-old Dan Giguere of Bradenton died at the scene of the crash.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, at around 7:30am, Giguere was driving southbound on U.S. 41 near Seagate Drive when he lost control of his car, which crossed over into the northbound lanes and was struck by a pickup truck.

His car began spinning and continued across northbound lanes until it struck a curb and fence on the east side of the highway.

The driver of the pickup truck, 22-year-old Mijail Hurtado-Chavez of Sarasota, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton.

Giguere is a physical fitness teacher and boys basketball coach at Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences.  He also worked for the nonprofit Sk8Skool, which runs the skate park at Payne Park.

Giguere received local notoriety in December, when he suddenly closed the skate park over a misunderstanding about a missing delivery to the park.
