SARASOTA Co., Fla (WWSB) -- The Sarasota Scullers Youth Rowing Program entered 16 boats and earned 13 medals at this past weekend's 8th annual Sarasota Invitational Regatta held at Nathan Benderson Park.
Jessica Cochran, Pine View junior, competed in the Women's Youth Lightweight 8+, placing second.
“At this regatta and American Youth Cup, it's clear that we're finally getting to a really great place,” Cochran said of the club’s performance. “The team had lots of fun and the medal count really boosted everyone's confidence for the rest of the season, giving us a great foundation and motivation to continue training hard and winning.”
The Sarasota Invitational Regatta is an annual two-day event held at Nathan Benderson Park the last weekend in February. Teams travel from around the state and nation to compete at the regatta.
Freshman coxswain Shannon Chan agreed. “I'm really proud of my team. We really revived ourselves and I can confidently say that we left our all on the water which is what matters.” Chan, Pine View School, coxed the winning Women's Youth Novice 8+ in addition to the second-place Women’s Lightweight 8+ and Women's Youth Novice 4+.
Scullers will race again in one month at American Youth Cup II at Nathan Benderson Park.
