SARASOTA-- Reminiscent of a scene from the 1960s, three dozen protesters gathered at Five Points Park in Sarasota Monday night, rallying against plans for U.S. military intervention in Syria.

Protesters held signs with peace symbols on them and the words, "Peace is the answer," and "No more war." Those who attended argue that the United States should stop policing the world.

"To bomb and use military intervention is starting to lower ourselves to the standard used in the first place. When we talk military intervention, we are talking weapons too," said Keith Gerber, a protester.

The Syrian government is accused of using chemical weapons against some of its own citizens.

"The people that came here tonight are the brave ones who are willing to go out and speak up for what's right," said Shakti Marquis, a protester.

One of the bravest may be the only person to show up supporting some sort of intervention plan. Joanna Daly-Gumberg spoke with many of the protestors as to why she feels it's necessary.

"We can't just stay here and do nothing," Daly-Gumberg said. "We need to send a message that chemical weapons are wrong, wrong, wrong."

To the delight of those attending the rally, it was announced Monday that the U.S. Senate would delay its vote on military action, after Russia said it would ask Syria to hand over its chemical weapons.

Also on Monday, Suncoast Congressman Vern Buchanan released this statement: “After attending the classified briefing, I remain opposed to intervening in Syria’s civil war.  Launching a strike in the Middle East with no clear military objective or vital national security interest is a prescription for failure.  America can no longer afford to be the world’s policeman.”
