SARASOTA, Fla. - Gilberto Perez has been found guilty of sexually battering a blind woman as she slept in her bedroom last year.

The State Attorney's Office sentenced 34-year-old Perez to the maximum 15 year sentence on Wednesday.

Perez was arrested June 22nd, 2012 in Sarasota after being accused of battery two nights before.

The 22-year-old victim told investigators that she had gone to bed while her roommate and his friends -- including Perez -- continued drinking in the apartment.  The victim was awakened early the next morning as Perez was assaulting her.

The roommate confronted Perez about the assault, and Perez fled the residence.

He was later located and charged with Sexual Battery against a Physically Helpless Victim.
