SARASOTA, Fla. - A Sarasota man was arrested early Wednesday after police say he fatally struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk and attempted to keep driving.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, 66-year-old Mark Steinberg was driving south on Tamiami Trail around 12:45am approaching Bahia Vista.  That's when they say his SUV drove onto the sidewalk and struck a pedestrian and a light pole.

Deputies say Steinberg continued to drive southbound, passing an officer, who heard the crash and saw the damaged vehicle and pulled him over.

Steinberg told investigators that he had not been drinking or on medication and was on his way to work at a coffee shop.  Officers at the scene say that Steinberg appeared "out of it" and seemed confused.  His blood was taken and submitted for investigation.

The pedestrian, 44-year-old Gerald Blalock of Sarasota, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Steinberg has been charged with DUI Manslaughter, DUI with Property Damage, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death.
