SARASOTA, Fla. – A fishing tournament took place at Marina Jack on Saturday to help a sick child get through 70 weeks of chemotherapy.
Cooper Vollmer is a local two year-old boy recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Cooper's tumor is on the right and left side of his brain and extends to the top third of his brain stem.
Surgery is not an option but 70 weeks of chemotherapy is. Cooper is currently ten weeks into his chemotherapy treatment.
100% of Saturday's entry fees from the fishing event went to help Cooper get through his chemotherapy. In addition Marina Jack matched the money amount raised to double the donation amount. More than 50 fishing vessels participated in Saturday's tournament.
Two year old Cooper's mother, Tina Vollmer, said she is so grateful for the support. “I would just like to thank everybody that came out and supported us, everyone that came out to fish and to meet Cooper, it just means so much to us to have everyone loving our Cooper. Our friends, family and community have been so amazing, they have gotten right behind us and have given us the strength to push through the next 60 weeks.”
A local support group for Cooper refer to themselves as 'Team Coop'.
