SARASOTA, FL. - Sarasota deputies responding to a domestic disturbance are nearly run over with a car.

It happened around 3 am Saturday at 3300 block of Ashton Road.

Deputies broke up a verbal altercation between 32-year-old James Gilliam and 26-year-old Tara Reed. After separating the two, deputies say Gilliam jumped into his car and took off, nearly hitting the two deputies.

It was learned the vehicle the suspects were occupying was a suspect vehicle involved in a residential burglary that took place on Friday morning in the 3300 block of Ashton Road in Sarasota. The vehicle contained most of the stolen items from the burglary.

A 4-hour search resulted in both suspects being spotted in the 2700 Block of Bay Street off of Tuttle Avenue. The suspects again fled from deputies in different directions. Gilliam was taken into custody after a foot chase and being struck by a Taser. Gilliam was found to be in possession of additional stolen property from the burglary. Reed was subsequently arrested without incident and found to be in possession of controlled substances.

Gilliam was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. While handcuffed, he managed to escape from a restroom and began sprinting down several hallways with a deputy in pursuit. He exited the hospital and ran several blocks before being apprehended in the 1900 block of Hibiscus Street by Officers of the Sarasota Police Department.

Both Gilliam and Reed are now in the custody of the Sarasota County jail on multiple charges.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Section will continue with the investigation into this duo for their criminal activity. Additional criminal charges are likely to be filed.
