Sarasota County traffic engineers have been busy working to improve traffic flow on roads throughout the county. One way they are making it happen is with the Advanced Traffic Management System or ATMS.

"It is a computerized system. It is all connected with a fiber optic backbone,” explained project manager, Robbin Levar.

Fiber optic cable connect upgraded traffic signals which allow engineers to control the traffic lights from a central location like the counties traffic control center. Engineers are also able to monitor real time traffic conditions.

"We have about 156 closed circuit tv cameras that show real time traffic movement."

The cameras help engineers locate traffic problems on area roadways. If a problem occurs due to an accident or special event, traffic signals can be adjusted to improve traffic flow.

"Some of the major roadways have it on right now,” said Levar. She tells ABC 7, U.S. 41 from Jacaranda Blvd. in Venice all the way through Manatee County is synchronized.

Construction on phase three will begin next week on the island in Venice followed by phase 4 next summer in North Port. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by spring 2016.

One area that the lights definitely need syncing is Lakewood Ranch. It is horrible! It takes me 20 minutes to get through 2 lights. I've always wanted to complain to somebody - maybe this will get their eye. You get through one light and then the other turns red...traffic just creeps. Lakewood Ranch is getting busier with business and it needs to be addressed.

Wow, I remember someone telling me that it was in it's 1st stage in Manatee....Thought I noticed some differences in signal timing going to work and back during the last month or so. Cool. Thanks folks!

How do I get a special pass so they work for me 1st? Ha Ha. Scott
