MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Feld Entertainment, the parent company of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, has received a nearly $16 million settlement from a number of animal-rights groups.

It ends a 14-year legal battle over unproven allegations of mistreated elephants.

Feld Entertainment says this is a vindication of its animal care, and claims that the animal rights groups abused the legal system.

The initial lawsuit was filed in 2000 by a former Ringling barn helper.

Part of Feld Entertainment is based in Ellenton.

ABC 7's Max Winitz will have more on this story tonight on ABC 7 News at 5 & 6.
