Suncoast congressman Vern Buchanan (R, 16th District) visited the ABC 7 studio Thursday, fresh from his return from Washington, where he voted in favor of re-opening the federal government and preventing U.S. default.

“Jeopardizing the full faith and credit of the United States by defaulting on our obligations was not an option,” said Buchanan in a statement earlier Thursday.  “There is no question that we need to reduce spending and balance the budget, but not by degrading America’s credit rating and destroying our credibility.”

Here's his talk with ABC 7's Scott Dennis:

If Vern wants everybody to work together why did he vote for every bill to defund the ACA? He votes with the Republican Majority every vote which shows he is not interested in solving the Problems with the Congress. He has been in Congress for 6 years what has he acomplished? He has NO constituant service department. I have written or called his office 12-13 times in the last three years and have recieved ZERO responses.

well, I guess we'll just push this thing down the road. or as you Washington regulars say kick the can down the's true that the country would suffer some if we started to balance the budget now.. but there is no time like now.. it only happens occasionally..I believe Mr. Buchanan that you all caved way too soon.. and that the right side of the isle took a heck of a beating, but not for the reasons you may think.. Obama most certainly would have given in if you all just had the nerve to hang in there and do what you voted in to do... a constitutionial gov't is needed .. now would be a good time to start.. I , for one, am very disappointed with the outcome.. you gave in to everything and really got nothing in return.. a lousy performance by all of you that voted FOR this one way dealll
