PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- It's believed more than five thousand people are expected to pay their respects to Sgt. Michael Wilson this weekend. The Charlotte County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed in the line of duty Monday night. A long time law and family man, many will remember Wilson for his dedication to both.

Blue ribbons are tied all around Charlotte County. "The ribbons we've put up are to honor Mike's memory." Captain Jim Nichols of the has known his friend Mike for more than two decades. "Mike always had a smile on his face. Always friendly. Just a nice guy."

Friends like Nichols say he always wanted to be in law enforcement. A 21-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office Wilson graduated from Port Charlotte high school in 1990. Before working the street crimes unit and becoming a road supervisor he started his career overseeing inmates in the jail and a school resource officer at his Alma mater. "That's where my children graduated from. All my children knew him well. Especially my youngest daughter."

Known for his big grin and love of reeling them in around Boca Grande. "He liked to fish."

His first love though was his family. Wife Joanne and three teenage children. Brandon, Tyler, and his little girl Emily. "He was a great father. He had a side business, a law business that he helped with money matter around the house. His children went a lot of places with him. I used to see his son out mowing grass with him with the law care business he had. He was quite the family man."

A family now without the man who's personality and optimistic outlook on life drew so many to him. "It's hard on everyone, especially his family. They've now lost a father."

Remembering him now for giving all while doing what he always wanted to do. Protecting and Serving. "You think about the good time you had with him and the conversations you had. You are going to miss him."
