LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. - For the first time since Alexandra (Lexi) Brown's tragic passing, the 10-year-old's family on the Suncoast is reacting to her untimely death.  Lexi, a resident of Parrish, was shot and killed in Ohio over the weekend.

Police suspect her father, Timothy Brown, killed her before killing himself inside a vehicle near Toledo.

Wednesday at Honor Animal Rescue in Lakewood Ranch, Lexi's mother, step-father, step-sister and half-brother all gathered to speak to ABC 7 about the little girl.

According to family, Honor was like a second home to Lexi. She would often volunteer there by taking care of dogs and cats looking for new homes.  "She was always excited and happy to be here," said Karissa Mayer with Honor Animal Rescue. "She just lit up around these animals."

Family members say Lexi had two passions in life: dancing and caring for animals.

"She was always smiling and always laughing. She was someone who would be your best friend," said Lexi's mother, Nikki Lowe.

"She was loving and loved everything. You could not kill an ant or she would cry about it," said her half-brother, Tyler Sambucci.

"Everything reminds me of her. I just think of all the good things she brought to our growing family," said Lexi's step-sister, Hope Lowe.

Lexi's mother says she does not like to think about how her daughter died. Instead, she wants to make something positive happen, like raising money for Honor Animal Rescue in Lexi's name.

"I am going to miss her so much. Everyone around knows what a sweet, crazy, and amazing girl she was. Just remember that about her," said Nikki.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations to Honor Animal Rescue, by calling: (941) 302-0933. Honor plans to name a program after Lexi called, Lexi's Paw Pals. It will allow children to work and socialize with dogs and cats at the shelter.

May she rest in peace and may God be with her family in this time of sorrow.
