Recapping the top stories of 2012

SARASOTA-- 2012 was a busy year for news on the Suncoast. With only a few days left until 2013, we wanted to take a stroll down memory lane.

JANUARY: Bob Bartolotta resigns as Sarasota City Manager amid allegations of computer fraud. Tom Barwin is chosen to replace him later in the year.

MARCH: 17-year-old Shawn Tyson is found guilty of murdering two British tourists in Sarasota. He is sentenced to life in prison.

APRIL: Sarasota's famous Unconditional Surrender statue is struck by a car. It takes months to repair, and finally returns to the bayfront in December.

MAY: Longboat Key Police Chief Al Hogle is killed while riding his motorcycle in North Carolina.

JUNE: The Suncoast feels the wrath of Tropical Storm Debby.

OCTOBER: 47 cars crash into each other on I-75 near University Parkway. No one is killed.

  • Bradenton finally opens the city's much anticipated Riverwalk.
  • Bernadatte DiPino is named the city of Sarasota's first female Police Chief, replacing Mikel Holloway.

NOVEMBER: Sarasota's finest face criticism for dealing with the homeless. In one case, a homeless man is arrested for charging his cellphone at a public park. In another case, surveillance video from a SCAT station shows an officer throwing a homeless man into a metal railing head first.

DECEMBER: Manatee High School Hurricanes, lose in the state semi-finals to St. Thomas Aquinas. The Hurricanes were ranked the number one team in the nation.
