MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) – A father and his son made a new friend while boating off Anna Maria Island - a full sized hammerhead shark.
The highlight of John Sr. and John Jr.'s recent vacation had to be when the hammerhead went swimming by, almost touching the boat, in crystal clear water.
"He has been talking about his pet hammerhead 'sharky' for 48 hours now," John McKeown said about his 6-year-old son. The family often visits the area and goes boating near Anna Maria with a friend, Captain Jason Lineberger of Ruthless Charters.
Hammerhead sharks can grow up to 20 feet in length and weigh up to 1,000 pounds, although smaller sizes are more common. They do not seek out humans as prey but will attack if provoked.
