Questions remain unanswered over chicken head device in the road

SARASOTA, Fla. - On Tuesday, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office did not want to talk to ABC 7 about the possible voodoo chicken that the bomb squad rendered safe on Monday.

Deputies were called to the Ridgewood Heights Neighborhood at the corner of Grand Cayman Street and Swift Road about 1pm on Monday after suspicious items were noticed. The items included a ceramic bowl with a chicken head and feathers next to a cylindrical item in a brown paper bag.

The hazardous devices unit X-rayed the cylindrical item inside the bag and was not able to identify the gel like contents and the items were destroyed on the scene.

Chickens are commonly used in several religious practices including Voodoo and Santeria, and some neighbors are concluding religion was the reason the chicken head was found in the bowl.

“If I were to take a guess, chicken head, I would probably say Santeria,” said neighbor Ryan Kellemen. He thinks religion is as good an explanation as any as to why the head of chicken was found in a bowl. “We get a lot of immigrants and stuff that come through from West Africa and the Caribbean so that is were it originates so it is a possibility. “

The chicken head was found on Grand Cayman Street next to Jamaica, Trinidad, and Nassau Streets.

“Grand Cayman and Jamaica and all these streets around here kind of go with that so maybe it is possible,” said neighbor Jason Trevino.

About a dozen chickens live at the home across the street from where the head was found, but all that was left of the chicken bowl on Tuesday after it was destroyed by the sheriff's office was some of the gel substance and a couple small sea shells.

“The bomb squad has been at the end of the road at least twice that I have seen. The last time was for a possible crystal meth lab and this time apparently it was voodoo, so I don’t know what it is going on at the end of the road down here but it is pretty crazy,” said Trevino.

Whether the chicken head in a bowl was someone's idea of a joke or another's religious practice, the exact reason why it was by the road will most likely remain a mystery but for me one thing is clear: no matter what happens to the chicken's head the rest of the chicken remains as tasty as ever.

Do you believe in voodoo?

The recent discovery of a severed chicken head in a bowl in Sarasota has some residents suspecting voodoo. But that's all just superstition ... right?
