HARDEE COUNTY, Fla. - A Punta Gorda woman died Thursday after troopers say her vehicle drifted into an oncoming tractor trailer.

The crash happened at 4:17pm on U.S. 17 near Fish Branch Road, about halfway between Arcadia and Zolfo Springs.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 28-year-old Carol Maherg of Punta Gorda was driving southbound on U.S. 17 when for unknown reasons, she drove across the center line into the northbound lane as the tractor-trailer was passing by.

Maherg's vehicle crashed into the rear axle of the trailer, separating the axles off the trailer.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

No charges have been filed.
