PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Charlotte County investigators are looking for the person who sheared a horse's mane potentially worth hundreds of dollars.

Deputies says that last Friday, a Punta Gorda man reported that sometime between December 1st and December 3rd, someone entered his pasture located along Indian Trail near North Jones Loop Road in Punta Gorda and cut the mane from a white and gray mare.

The mane itself was a smoky black or charcoal gray color.

According to the horse’s owner, the mane hair can be sold for as much as $250 to $300 a pound. The hair is used for such things as making jewelry, artist brushes and strings for instruments.

Anyone with information concerning the shearing of the horse’s mane is asked to please call the Sheriff’s Office at (941) 639-2101 for the Agricultural Detective, or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
