ENGLEWOOD, FL (WWSB) - The first public presentation on a history making archaeological find off Manasota Key is coming to Englewood next week. The Lemon Bay Historical Society is hosting the presentation on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at Englewood United Methodist Church.
A fossil hunter found the ancient burial site. Now, archaeologists from Florida's Department of State are helping researchers better understand how Florida's earliest people lived and what their landscape looked like. The site is estimated to be 7,200 years old and sits about 350-yards offshore Manasota Key in about 20 feet of water.
The site is also the first preserved prehistoric burial site in the Americas to be discovered in offshore waters, and one of just a few such sites known in the world. National Geographic calls it an "unprecedented" find.
Those attending the Tuesday presentation are requested to make a $10 donation to help save Englewood's historic Green Street Church.
