MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Florida transportation officials will discuss improvements to the Interstate 75/University Parkway interchange today.

The state wants to change University Parkway from the existing diamond design to a diverging diamond. They say the new design will better handle the increased traffic that's expected after the Mall at University Town Center opens there this fall.

There are also plans to widen I-75 from north of Fruitville Road to north of University Parkway.

The public meeting will take place at 4:30pm at the Holiday Inn Lakewood Ranch on Lake Osprey Drive.

This controversial interchange system could also be in the plans for other interchanges on I-75 in Sarasota and elsewhere.

ABC 7's Bobeth Yates is following this story and will have a report tonight on ABC 7 News.
