VENICE, Fla. - Today marks Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar. In preparation for Lent, many fill up before starting a fast on Ash Wednesday.

The Polish celebrate Fat Tuesday by eating paczkis, a donut that is traditional from Michigan that has more eggs, more spices, and a denser dough and then jammed full of fillings.

Yummies Donuts in Venice was the place to be Tuesday morning, as they sold more than five-thousand!

"I was online the other day looking for the nearest I could find to well east of Bradenton, and this is the nearest spot I could find that seemed to be serious about it," said Mike Phipps.

"I can see in my mind, my aunts and my mother, and we are all excited about paczki, the very special donut made just at this time of year," said Marcia Alfano.
