SARASOTA, Fla. - Volunteers at the Sarasota Police Department are not happy about being told to sign a liability waiver.  Last month more than a quarter of the department's 70 members of the civilian unit reportedly quit in protest of the waiver.

Volunteers say that by signing the waiver, they are giving up their right to sue the Sarasota Police Department. And conversely, if a volunteer is sued, it is not clear who will pay their attorney's fees.

The Sarasota Police Department says that waiver forms are standard in any type of volunteer program.

ABC 7's Todd Dunn is following this story and will have more tonight on ABC 7 News at 5 & 6.
