ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - No charges are expected to be filed after an apartment complex employee placed the body of a suicide victim in a dumpster, believing it to be an April Fool's joke.
According to St. Petersburg Police, a desk clerk at the Peterborough Apartments discovered the body of the 96-year-old victim in the parking lot around 4:30am Wednesday, but did not alert anybody of the body and returned to work.
The victim was a resident in the apartments and had left a suicide note before jumping out a 16th floor window.
Another employee arrived at 6:30am and saw the body, but was told it was a prank by the desk clerk. That employee placed the body in a dumpster with the help of newspaper deliverers.
It wasn't until about 8:00am, when an apartment maintenance worker arrived, looked into the dumpster and realized the victim was not a mannequin, but human.
An investigation revealed that the victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, had been depressed and suicidal.
