CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Port Charlotte man has been charged with animal cruelty after police say he was seen striking a puppy in the head Wednesday.

59-year-old Fred Sheetz was arrested Wednesday afternoon.  Witnesses at the Hungry Howies on Tamiami Trail told Punta Gorda Police that they saw Sheetz throw a 13-14 week old English Pointer in his vehicle by the back of his neck and then strike the puppy the area of his head approximately 10 times.

When asked why he was striking the puppy, Sheetz reportedly said, “that is how I train my dog, and the dogs needs to accept me.”

The puppy was turned over to Charlotte County Animal Control and appeared to be without serious injuries.

Sheetz was placed under arrest and transported to the Charlotte County Jail. He was charged with Animal Cruelty, a First Degree Misdemeanor. Sheetz was held in lieu of a $2,500.00 bond.
