SARASOTA, Fla. - Sarasota Police spent Saturday morning helping dozens of children shop for the holidays as part of the Sarasota Housing Authority's 2nd Annual Honor the Badge event.
More than 40 members of the Sarasota Police Department joined the Sarasota Housing Authority and Target to help and give back to more than 80 children and help them shop for the holidays.
The event was possible thanks to donations reaching nearly $10,000 from the Sarasota Police Department, local businesses, religious organizations and individuals prior to the event.
The event kicked off at 6am at the Fruitville Road Target when buses filled with children and their families arrived. Officers from the Sarasota Police Department were cheering and clapping to welcome the children and their families to their early morning shopping spree.
The Sarasota Housing Authority’s ‘Honor the Badge’ shopping event is an initiative designed to help build mutual trust and respect between law enforcement officials and children of families living in Sarasota Housing Authority communities.
