NORTH PORT, Fla. - North Port's police chief has asked the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office to look into the actions of some of his officers this past weekend. Two officers are on paid leave while the investigation is ongoing. But what exactly prompted all of this is still a mystery.

We are hearing a lot of rumors. According to one source, the situation involves a weekend party, the two officers, as well as a potential victim and something potentially sexual in nature. We don't know if that's true.

What we do know is it is a criminal investigation.

"Two officers are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation," says Police Chief Kevin Vespia. He says he heard about inappropriate activity of those officers and now a serious investigation is taking place. "Because of some of the information received, it may have criminal implications."

Vespia says there could be a third person; a victim.

As far as anything else, Vespia says a state statute keeps them from revealing details until the investigation is complete. "I cannot comment on the particulars of the investigation." He adds, "I understand the rumors and speculation, but right now it's all speculation until we get the facts of the case. Those that know me know I am a fact-based person. I like having all the facts before making a determination. That is simply what the process is; fact finding to find out exactly what happened."
