MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Manatee County is a step closer to building a new county bridge over the Manatee River.

The Bradenton Herald reports that the Corps of Engineers has granted the county's permit for construction of the Fort Hamer Bridge.

The span will connect Upper Manatee River Road and Fort Hamer Road in east Manatee County.

The county still needs permission from the Coast Guard to go ahead with construction, which could start in 2015.
