Homeless man killed while crossing U.S. 41 in Sarasota

SARASOTA - The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit is currently investigating a fatal car crash that occurred on May 17, 2013 at approximately 9:30 PM U.S. 41 and Arlington St.

54-year-old Mark F. Heggan, who is listed as homeless, was crossing S. Tamiami Tr. from east to west near Arlington St. Heggan was struck by a Toyota Tundra pickup truck in the southbound inside lane.

Sarasota Traffic Unit responded and contacted three witnesses, as well as the driver of the truck.

Heggan was transported to the hospital via Bayflite where he was later pronounced deceased.

At this time there are no charges or citations for the driver of the truck.

This crash is still under investigation.

    I was gassing up my car when it happened. The bang was so loud it brought everybody out of the restaurant's and gas stations .It truly was one of the worst accidents I have seen on 41. When a pedestrian collides with a ambulance it is not good.
